8 Weeks
New this week: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but the external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can't feel it.

First Appointment with the Midwife
We had our first appointment with the midwives today and it went great! There are three midwives in the office and each time I will meet with a different one so that I know and am comfortable with each one. Pretty easy appointment...we went over family history and any questions we had. They took urine and blood samples (the latter of which Justin held my hand and talked me through it...much easier for me when he is there). She examined my uterus and ovaries and then we had the option of having our first ultrasound. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to see our little bean :) We were able to see a tiny blur and flicker where the heart is beating away already! And I have VERY good news....there is only ONE Baby Voigts present!!! Mary said that my uterus was growing well, the baby's heart was fluttering at a rapid pace and that everything looked great so far.
Baby Voigts is still pretty tiny but he/she is located in the bottom, left corner of my uterus in the top two pictures. In the third picture, he/she is a light blur in the middle.
Now I am just waiting to get my blood work back and hopefully all is well on that front also. We did give the go ahead to test for cystic fibrosis and I am still debating on the other genetic testing available. Since my mom is adopted and we don't have any medical history, I just would feel more comfortable knowing as much as I can. But we will see, J and I have not talked it over in detail yet.
We did learn that at 20 weeks we can find out the sex of our baby so we are anxiously awaiting mid October! For now I will be going in once a month until I am further into my pregnancy. Our next appointment is on August 31st. Hoping that the next five weeks go by quickly and uneventfully ;)

7 Weeks
Greeting from Whitehall, Michigan! We left Colorado last Friday (7/16/10) and arrived in MI on Saturday evening to start the Voigts' family vacation. The last few days have been relaxing with no major activities planned and plenty of time for naps :) My nausea (which started at about 5 1/2 weeks) has not been too bad this week. But I have been so so so tired!!! Baby V has been taking a lot from me this week and the fact that I have been getting up multiple times a night to go to the bathroom does not help!
We when get back to Colorado, we have our first doctors appointment on Tuesday, July 27th. I never realized that most doctors will not see you until your at least 8 weeks so we are very anxious to see how the first appointment goes. We are going to the Midwifery Group at Swedish for all of our prenatal care so long as my pregnancy remains low risk. This will be the first time we have met the midwives so I am hopeful that we feel comfortable and they are able to give us the experience we are looking for.
And now it's time for Baby V's weekly progress :)
The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.
If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until her bone marrow forms and takes over this role. She also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.

6 Weeks
I have decide to post weekly updates on our baby's progress for those of you who have not yet had a need to read the 'baby books' or for those of you who have not read the books in some time :)

His heart is beating about 100 to 160 times a minute — almost twice as fast as yours — and blood is beginning to course through his body. His intestines are developing, and the bud of tissue that will give rise to his lungs has appeared. His pituitary gland is forming, as are the rest of his brain, muscles, and bones. Right now, your baby is a quarter of an inch long, about the size of a lentil."

I'm pregnant!!!
It has been two weeks since I discovered I am pregnant and it is still very strange to say those words...I'm pregnant! Baby Voigts was not a 'surprise' but it was still a shock when the first, second, and third pregnancy test came up positive on June 29, 2010. You try so hard for so long NOT to get pregnant and when it finally happens it is a very surreal feeling.
Justin had already left for work the morning I found out. My mom was out visiting us and I knew I had to tell Justin first but I also knew I would not be able to keep the big news a secret until he got home that night so I made up a tiny fib to get out of the house. I drove to Justin's office with the excuse that I had gotten a decoration for his office. When Justin got in the car he was confused when I handed him a small bag instead of a large picture for his wall. Inside the bag were two bottles of bubble bath I had picked up on my way to his office. He looked even more baffled as he asked me why I got him bubble bath for his office. I told him that he was allowed to take baths again. (On a side note, I told Justin he could not take baths while we were trying to get pregnant...causes slow swimmers ;)...and he was NOT happy.) When my statement didn't dispel his confusion, I handed him a bag of positive pregnancy tests...and I'll never forget the look on his face.
Later in the day, we told the rest of our immediate family and they all shared in our excitement.
The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions and changes. Right now it seems like it will be so long until we have our baby in our arms but I have a feeling I'll be singing a different tune in six month ;) I will be 6 weeks tomorrow and in all honesty I am just hoping the next 6 weeks fly by and we safely make it through the first trimester. Happy thoughts!!!
